A French teenager was held in prison for crossing the border from Canada to the U.S while out for jogging at the beach.
She was kept in US detention until the matter was studied. In her statement to AFP she told that “It was like I was living my worst nightmare and it was very horrific” said Cedella Roman, 19.
On May 21 i.e. Friday she opened up her story about her small mistake which costs her freedom. She told how she obliviously entered the United States of America from British border in front of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
While she was running across beachside she was taken into custody by two US Border patrol officers. They told her that she is way away from his country and entered in the US. Apparently, her actions were caught in camera also that served a violation of rules.
Cedella fingerprints were taken as in identity proof as she wasn’t carrying any paper or document.
“That’s when I began to get very afraid. It was like being a big criminal,” she told AFP by telephone.
She was very scared as many questions were asked while she was in US custody. Later, she was transferred to Tacoma Northwest Detention Center which is located at 200kms away to the south.
She was in 24×7 watch and she spent two weeks with 100 more strangers (immigrants) in the ridiculously worst condition of food and water and with the availability of 60 beds only.
Roman told, “the people were nice and they were very helpful too as we very helping each other, I saw that there were people from African and other countries for the same mistake as mine and I realized that this is no serious condition”.
Her mother rushed to the US to set free her child while carrying passports and other documents.
After everything was confirmed she free on June 6 and was legalized to visit her country again. All the charges against her were also removed. This silly mistake banned her from visiting the US ever.
Ferne, Roman mother said that “It’s like a trap… anybody can be caught at the border like this”. Why normal civilians like us would ever do this.
